Course Objectives

More than four hundred years after his death, William Shakespeare remains the central author of the English-speaking world, the most quoted poet and the most regularly produced playwright. In line with the most recent critical trends and the rhetoric studies, this course unit aims at discussing some of Shakespeare’s plays with greater understanding and enjoyment. Emphasis will be placed throughout on looking attentively at some important topics like power and leadership linked to the fields of economy, law and politics, although issues of narration, relationship and persuasion will also be taken into consideration.

Abilities: By the end of this course, students will have developed an understanding of Shakespeare’s works—their style, their linguistic accomplishments, their hallmarks—as well as a working knowledge of the way in which classics can be useful also in the modern world.
Self-assessment: Students will acquire sufficient skills to give critical response to Shakespeare’s writing in terms of the topics chosen.
Communicative skills: Students will be able to discuss the plays, their contexts and topics, as well as Shakespeare’s poetic and dramatic writing.

Contents

The course revolves around the analysis of three plays by William Shakespeare: Hamlet, Julus Caesar, Henry V. These represent the themes of power and the use of the language when exerting power. The three plays ( a tragedy, a Roman play and a history) have become versatile texts who offer reflections beyond the literary field of interest. They, as well as other Shakespearian Plays, can be read as handbooks for leaders and managers in the fields of politics and business.
