Energia: la città come sistema dinamico

Chapter
Publication Date:
2018
abstract:
The city is the most complex thing man has accomplished. The city is an overlapping of material landscapes and imaginary landscapes, is alive, breathing because it does not develop according to the rules of the world of crystals, but according to the rules of living organisms. The city, immersed in this dynamic reality, in our eyes, is a living organism, a system that breathes, nourishes, assumes its own identity and communicates. We believe that some theories of evolutionary thermodynamics, chemistry, environmental physics and ecology, elaborated for the understanding of biological systems and living systems, can be extended to the study of social systems and urban systems and that can bring new elements to interpret it operation. To achieve an operational definition of ecological sustainability, we do not need to invent anything by the principles for sustainable human communities from the outset, as we can model them on the image of natural ecosystems, which are sustainable communities of plants, animals and microorganisms. Thus, the operational definition of sustainability implies that we must understand those organizational principles common to all living systems that ecosystems have evolved during evolution in order to support the “network” of life. Attention to the dynamic components of urban systems, energy and material flows, information exchange, and the formation of ordered structures are the novelty and challenge of contemporary architecture. The environmental quality that needs to be pursued is characterized by these two dimensions of the project: from the place, its culture and its topography, climate, wind, relative humidity, sun, etc., but also from the activities carried out in space to design.
