Using the works of Michel Foucault and Pierre Bourdieu, this book investigates the institution and principles of German Studies and critically reconstructs its history from the early nineteenth century to this day. It analyzes the methods and self-definitions of German Studies over the centuries, disclosing its operation as an apparatus and emphasizing the connections between knowledge and power both within and outside of the field.
