During the 19th century the railway produced territorial and urban transformations in Italy, driving the rapid development of cities that had been static for centuries. At a national level the Adriatic line provided territorial cohesion, while at an international level it offered an important link for trade with the East. Pescara and Brindisi are thus two emblematic cases that provide interesting new perspectives on the relationship between historic cities and a new system of transportation.
