abstract:
Romano Guardini’s long acquaintance with Dante reveals an authen- tic philosophical interest in Dante, considered an important thinker, as well as a great poet. Dante still interprets the possibility of a harmonious relationship between the subject and the cosmos, before the modern breakdown, that began with the Renaissance. In a time of crisis Guardini considers it fundamental to resort to (christian) poetry, and in particular to «poets of transparency and clar- ity» such as Dante, who retain confidence in the reconciliation of opposites that govern life. The recovery of the unitary vision of the world (Weltanschauung), as a cognitive element and not just an aesthetic one, the recovery of a reconciling approach to opposites is, according to Guardini, typical of a “mediterranean thought”. This thought can act as an antidote in the modern era, characterized by the hypertrophy of the subject and the exasperation of opposing tensions.
