abstract:
Pindar’s fr. 108b Maehl. and Bacchylides’ fr. 57 Maehl. have been assigned to
the hyporchematic genre on the basis of their supposed metrical responsion with
Pindar’s fr. 108a Maehl. and Bacchylides’ fr. 14 Maehl. (hyporchemata). Through a
deeper analysis, this paper shows that in both cases the metrical responsion is very
dubious, since it is founded on unnecessary amendments to the text. Special attention is paid to the form ἀλαθείᾱ adopted by Maehlerin Bacchyl. frr. 14 + 57, 5 instead
of ἀλάθειᾰ. According to Maehler, the prosody of this word would be sustained by
Bacchyl. Ep. 13, 204, where ἀλαθείᾱ is normally printed by scholarsin orderto obtain
a perfect responsion with the corresponding lines of the poem. Nevertheless, I suggest that in Ep. 13, 204 one could not exclude the possibility of ἀλάθειᾰ, by admitting
the ‘free’ responsion cr ia ~ cr cho.
