In this paper I discuss the mockery of kitharodoi and auletai in the Attic comedy by focusing on four comic passages: in Ar. Ach. 9–16 I suggest that the musician Chaeris was
ridiculed through an obscene pun related to fellatio (παρέκυψε ἐπὶ τὸν Ὄρθιον); in Ar.
Pac. 950–955 and Av. 857–861 I support the idea that the same Chaeris was mocked by
insinuating that he attended to sacri!ces with the only objective to eat the victim’s flesh; as
regards Anaxandrid. fr. 42 K.–A., I highlight some features which seem to present the song
of Antigenidas, Argas and Cephisodotus in a very ridiculous way, in order to make fun of
the party where the song was performed.
