The Canadian Subtitler as a Storyteller of Inuit Culture

Chapter
Publication Date:
2023
abstract:
This book chapter shows how such films with subtitles as Before Tomorrow (2008), The Necessities of Life (2008), and Maïna (2013), not only envision their own detailed blueprints of Inuit communities, but are also audio-visual narratives examining the relationship between media and minority cultures. She tracks through these references and looks at the role of subtitling in the preservation of cultural specificity, as well
as subtitling strategies for rendering culture-bound terms. Her analysis of the cognitive linguistics of subtitling demonstrates that Inuit cultural diversity can be conceptualized in subtitling and that Inuit oral narratives are reproduced faithfully by audio-visual media, also suggesting that subtitling can become an extreme form of foreignization in audio-visual narratives.
