Abstract:
The essay examines the negotiations taking place in the aftermath of the Berlin Congress of 1878 in order to reach a modus vivendi between the Principality of Montenegro and the Holy See. The purpose was not only to guarantee a protection to the tiny Catholic minority in Montenegro, but also to establish a precedent for the relations between the Orthodox and the Catholic worlds. After long debates involving the closest advisers of Pope Leo XIII, Prince Nicola of Montenegro and the charismatic Bishop Strossmayer, the negotiations ended successfully with the signature of the 1886 Concordate.
