Metal-organic framework composites as sensors for gases and volatile compounds

Chapter
Publication Date:
2025
abstract:
Developing effective sensor materials that detect gases and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is crucial for protecting human health and the environment. This includes monitoring indoor and outdoor air quality, managing industrial processes, controlling food quality, and aiding in disease detection. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline and porous solid materials made of metal nodes (ions or clusters) and functional organic ligands. Recent research has focused on their potential as high-performance gas and VOC sensors due to their large surface area, tunable pore size, functionalizable sites, and unique properties like electrical conductivity, magnetism, ferroelectricity, luminescence, and chromism. In order to add beneficial features and make up for the weaknesses of the individual components, MOF-based composites and MOF-derived nanostructures are being created. Because of their synergistic effects, several of these composite materials have been acknowledged as suitable materials for sensing layers in high performance chemo-resistive gas sensors. This chapter focuses on different MOF-based composites for gas and VOCs sensing.
