Abstract:
Portmann’s biology was more successful among philosophers
and anthropologists than among biologists, who pointed out certain criti-
cisms. These criticisms, however, must be placed within the interpretative
framework of the science of the time, which was characterised more by neo-
Darwinism and the ‘epistemological hardening’ of the Modern Synthesis than
by Darwinist evolutionism. The current openness of biology to the historical
dimension of evolution allows for a more objective and positive reinterpreta-
tion of Portmann’s thought and his “introduction of the subject into biology”.
