A square for the city/Una piazza per la città, Images, studies and projects for Liria Square in Durres/Immagini, studi e progetti per Piazza Liria a Durazzo

This volume collects the images, preparatory studies and projects products around the activities of the International Competition for the revitalization of the square in Durres Liria, promoted by INARCH and the Forum of Adriatic and Ionian, sponsored by the Town Council of the city between July 2, 2008 and January 28, 2009 under the rule of the new Plan Urban Integrated central area, which was approved in October 2007. The competition, organized in two phases, first seen in a wide international participation (36 project participants) in the second, the development of five finalists through participatory activities and workshops, which led to the selection of the winning project, currently being running. But the competition as a whole, was also an opportunity to gather around the theme of public space and, more generally, the recovery and urban regeneration, in Durres in Albania, after many years of neglect and indifference, a vast area of experts, already working on site: archaeologists, urban planners, architects, engineers of public administration. Proving that even in turbulent Albania’s transition to a market economy and uncontrolled building development you can try to think quality and urban livability as shared core values of a new urban season (P.R.).
