Syllabus

Course Objectives

The final examination verifies the achievement of the professional profile envisaged by the Degree Course and the student's ability to integrate the competences acquired in the courses and in the professional internship.
Dublin Descriptor 1: Knowledge and understanding
At the end of the programme, students will be able to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the thesis topic and mastery of the theoretical foundations of cardiovascular perfusion and cardiocirculatory pathophysiology.
Dublin Descriptor 2: Applying knowledge and understanding
At the end of the programme, students will be able to apply procedures and techniques specific to the professional profile correctly and safely in a practical scenario, and to design and carry out a research project or literature review.
Dublin Descriptor 3: Making judgements
At the end of the programme, students will be able to critically appraise scientific sources, interpret data and results, and draw reasoned conclusions relevant to professional practice.
Dublin Descriptor 4: Communication skills
At the end of the programme, students will be able to write a structured scientific thesis and present it with clarity, terminological rigour and appropriate multimedia support, sustaining the discussion with the Board.
Dublin Descriptor 5: Learning skills
At the end of the programme, students will be able to independently search, select and update their knowledge according to the principles of evidence-based practice, a prerequisite for continuing professional education (CME) and for any further studies.

Course Prerequisites

To be admitted to the final examination, students must have passed all course examinations and obtained all the credits required by the study plan, including those of the professional internship, except for the credits assigned to the final examination, in compliance with the administrative deadlines set by the University.

Teaching Methods

The thesis is prepared under the guidance of a supervisor (and possibly a co-supervisor), chosen by the student among the lecturers of the Degree Course, with periodic individual tutoring meetings devoted to: choice and definition of the research question; literature search and critical selection of sources; data collection and analysis, where applicable; drafting, revision and preparation of the presentation.
Preparation for the practical test is based on the competences acquired during the professional internship and laboratory activities over the three years.

Assessment Methods

The practical test assesses the ability to manage situations and procedures specific to the professional profile (e.g. set-up and simulated conduct of extracorporeal circulation, management of mechanical circulatory support systems, performance and interpretation of cardiocirculatory pathophysiology tests). Failure in the practical test precludes access to the thesis discussion.
The thesis discussion is evaluated on the basis of: relevance and originality of the topic; methodological rigour; quality of the critical analysis; clarity of presentation and command of terminology; ability to answer the Board's questions.
The final grade is expressed out of 110, with possible honours (lode), and is determined according to the criteria established by the Degree Course Regulations, taking into account the student's academic career and the evaluations of the practical test and of the thesis.

Students with disabilities, specific learning disorders (SLD) or other special educational needs may benefit from individualized arrangements during examinations, in compliance with the applicable legislation and with the provisions of the University's Service Charter (https://www.unich.it/sites/default/files/2024-02/carta_dei_servizi_0.pdf), subject to prior agreement with the course lecturer. To request compensatory and dispensatory measures, students must contact the CON_TE_STO Service, following the procedure indicated in the Service Charter.
Students are invited to contact the lecturer during the course, or in any case well in advance of the examination date, to learn about the examination arrangements and the measures that are accepted.

Contents

The final examination of the Degree Course in Cardiocirculatory Pathophysiology and Cardiovascular Perfusion Techniques has the legal value of a State examination qualifying for professional practice (Legislative Decree 502/1992, art. 6(3); Interministerial Decree of 19 February 2009). It consists of two parts:
a) a practical test, in which the student demonstrates the theoretical-practical and technical-operational knowledge and skills specific to the professional profile of the cardiovascular perfusion technologist;
b) the writing of a thesis and its discussion before the Examination Board.
The thesis may be experimental (clinical or laboratory study, including retrospective studies, conducted under the supervisor's guidance), a literature review (narrative or systematic review, Best Evidence Topic – BET) or an in-depth technical-professional study on perfusion, extracorporeal circulation, mechanical circulatory support, cardiovascular diagnostics and cardiac surgery.

More information

The request for assignment of the thesis topic must be submitted to the supervisor well in advance of the chosen session, according to the procedures and deadlines set by the Degree Course. The final examination is held in two sessions per year, according to the calendar defined by the University in compliance with ministerial regulations. The Board is appointed according to current legislation and includes the representatives designated by the Professional Order.
