Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (21/09/2026 - 21/12/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, students will be able to:
° describe the origin and transmission of major bioelectrical signals and relate them to measurement requirements;
° explain the functional architecture of a biomedical measurement chain, from the sensor to signal acquisition and display;
° analyse the operating principles, performance and limitations of the diagnostic, monitoring, therapeutic and life-support equipment covered;
° interpret key cardiovascular and respiratory parameters and recognise the fundamental modes of mechanical ventilation;
° describe the physical principles of electrosurgery, ultrasound imaging and Doppler ultrasound;
° compare infusion devices, prosthetic devices and artificial-organ solutions using essential technical criteria;
° assess the main electrical hazards associated with patient interfacing and justify suitable protective measures;
° apply the acquired knowledge to problem solving and communicate technical choices using appropriate terminology.

Course Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of calculus, physics, geometry and statistics. Students should be able to interpret graphs, physical quantities and simple block diagrams, and to perform calculations using consistent units.

Teaching Methods

Teaching includes lectures, guided problem-solving sessions and laboratory activities. Lectures introduce theoretical foundations and device operating principles; exercises develop analytical and problem-solving skills; laboratory work connects theory, measurement and interpretation of results. Learning materials and practical information are provided through the e-learning platform.

Assessment Methods

Learning is assessed through a structured written examination consisting of open-ended questions and problems on the course topics. The examination assesses knowledge accuracy, the ability to apply models and principles to problem solving, consistent use of units and clarity of reasoning. An optional oral examination, consisting of two theoretical questions, is available to students who obtain at least 16/30 in the written examination. Students may take the written examination at the end of the course or sit a mid-course test covering the topics taught in the first part of the course. A small-group project completed during the course also contributes to the final assessment. The final mark is expressed on a 30-point scale; honours may be awarded for comprehensive preparation and particularly strong analytical and critical skills.

Contents

The course introduces the biological, electronic and metrological foundations of biomedical instrumentation. It covers sensors and systems for acquiring bioelectrical signals, equipment for cardiovascular, neurological and respiratory monitoring, life-support and therapeutic devices, ultrasound diagnostic techniques and prosthetic systems. Topics include electrocardiography, electroencephalography, pacemakers and defibrillators, measurement of blood pressure and respiratory-mechanics parameters, anaesthesia machines, mechanical ventilators, electrosurgical units, infusion pumps, ultrasound, Doppler ultrasound, electrical safety of electromedical equipment, prosthetic devices and artificial organs. Particular attention is given to operating principles, performance, limitations, hazards and conditions of use in healthcare environments.

Course Language

Italian. Erasmus students may take the examination in English.
