Syllabus
Course Objectives
The course consolidates and further develops the linguistic, communicative, and translation skills acquired during the first year of the Master's Degree Programme, guiding students towards CEFR C2 proficiency. Through the study of discourse analysis, specialised translation and, for students enrolled in the LM-38 curriculum, French for international relations, the course provides the theoretical and methodological tools required to operate effectively in professional, institutional, and intercultural contexts in which French serves as a language of communication, mediation, and cooperation.
Specific Learning Outcomes
In line with the overall learning objectives of the course, French Language and Translation II (LM-37/LM-38, CEFR C2 level) aims to enable students to:
master the theoretical and methodological tools of discourse analysis and apply them to authentic texts belonging to a variety of genres, including journalistic, institutional, literary, and promotional texts;
refine their translation skills from a discourse-oriented and functional perspective, adapting translation strategies to register, communicative purpose, and context of use;
identify and appropriately reformulate the main communicative and argumentative strategies employed in contemporary French texts, producing effective translations into Italian;
develop an awareness of the intercultural and interlinguistic mechanisms underlying translation in specialised and semi-specialised domains;
strengthen their critical reading, writing, and language mediation skills in complex discursive contexts, such as institutional, political, media, and cultural communication;
for students enrolled in the LM-38 curriculum, deepen their knowledge of French in diplomatic, legal, and international settings, including through the translation of official documents.

Course Prerequisites
Have a C1 level of French proficiency.
Teaching Methods
Lectures, group and individual work, translation lab.
Assessment Methods
The assessment is designed to verify the achievement of the intended learning outcomes, with particular reference to the linguistic, translation, communicative, and discourse analysis skills developed throughout the course.
Language Classes (CEL) – Written Assessment
Listening comprehension.
Essay writing based on the materials provided.
Target proficiency level: CEFR C1–C2.
The use of a monolingual dictionary is allowed.
Language Classes (CEL) – Oral Assessment
An oral examination designed to assess whether students have attained the required level of linguistic competence on the topics covered during the language classes.
Course Written Examination
The written examination consists of two parts: a guided discourse analysis of a French-language text; the translation of the same text into Italian.
Continuous Assessment
In-course assessment activities are scheduled during the semester.
Course Oral Examination
An oral interview covering the topics addressed in the three course modules.
Students with disabilities, specific learning disorders (SLD), or other special educational needs may request individualized examination arrangements, in accordance with current legislation and the University's Service Charter (https://www.unich.it/sites/default/files/2024-02/carta_dei_servizi_0.pdf), subject to prior agreement with the course instructor.

The course, designed for second-year students enrolled in the LM-37 and LM-38 Master's Degree Programmes, aims to consolidate the linguistic, communicative, and translation skills required at CEFR C2 level.
The course is organised into three integrated modules that combine the theoretical and practical study of discourse analysis, the application of specialised translation from a functional perspective, and, for students enrolled in the LM-38 curriculum, a specific focus on translation in institutional and international political contexts.
The overall aim of the course is to foster a critical, professional, and reflective approach to the French language in both its written and spoken forms, through the analysis of authentic materials and their use in complex discursive contexts.
