Syllabus

Course Objectives


Goals:



- Focusing on characteristics and differences between dramatic and narrative text;



- Acquiring the main investigative tools to analyze dramatic text and its stage adaptation;



- Analyzing the different functions of dramatic text: the communicative ones, the authorial ones and the ones related to reception;



- Placing the texts and the authors in the history of theatre and of literature in general.


Course Prerequisites


Students will be familiar with the basic notions of Italian literary history


Teaching Methods


Power-point assisted Lectures; seminars, occasionally conducted by specialist guest speakers

Assessment Methods


Students will take an oral exam, conversing on the topics dealt with in class and listed in this syllabus. They will be asked 6-7 questions meant to assess their ability to express themselves correctly, and their knowledge of the historical context, the socio-cultural issues, as well as the stylistic and thematic peculiarities of the authors’ works. Their ability to understand and conduct a critical analysis of the literary texts listed in this syllabus will be also assessed.The final score will be from 0 to 30. Students will pass the exam with a sufficient score if they show a basic knowledge of the topics; they will get an excellent score if they show a very good knowledge of the topics and an ability to develop an in-depth analysis and a critical discourse on them.

The theatrical text and the "reforms" of the comedy.



We will analyze at first the differences between narrative text and dramatic text, especially considering the structuring categories of space and time and analyzing how theatre incorporates space within the writing. The various parts of the theatrical text will be analyzed (syntactic units and conventions of dramatic and spectacular writing), and we will focus particularly on the functions of the choir and its evolution over time. We will then follow the development of the comedy, starting from Renaissance comedy, through the commedia dell'arte, the Goldoni reform and the Pirandello’s one, and the comic forms of dialect theatre, showing also the twentieth-century transformation of comedy into bourgeois drama and the transition from theatre company lead to theatre director.
