Syllabus

Course Objectives


The course aims to provide students with the theoretical foundations of the psychology of language and communication, along with some tools for the analysis of spontaneous speech and non-verbal communication. The course's objective is to build knowledge and skills useful for understanding and intervening in individual behavior, managing communication within and between organizations, and planning more effective public policies. Additionally, the course intends to promote the development of critical thinking regarding how the use of language and adopted communication strategies can influence the social, political, and economic context, and the impact of new technologies on communication techniques, with related effects on behavior.

At the end of the course the student will be able to:
- Use the technical terminology specific to the psychology of language
- Identify the use of main communication strategies in various corporate and public contexts
- Recognize the connection between language, thought, and behavior, using it in different professional settings
- Generate logical reasoning and discourse, recognizing incomplete and biased reasoning
- Communicate scientific results clearly, comprehensively, and effectively
​​​​​​​- Being autonomous in specialistic knowledge gathering and summarizing

Teaching Methods


The course is delivered in person and has a duration of 48 hours. The teaching activity is structured as follows:

lectures, supported by PowerPoint slides, aimed at delivering theoretical content, systematising key concepts, and acquiring discipline-specific language
in-class exercises (e.g., reading and discussion of scientific articles), useful for applying acquired knowledge and developing skills in interpretation, critical reflection, and problem-solving
oral presentations, aimed at developing transversal skills such as independent judgement, analytical and synthesis abilities, and communication competences
tutoring activities on course content

Attendance is not mandatory, but it is strongly recommended, as active participation in the various teaching activities significantly supports the achievement of the course learning objectives.

Assessment Methods

The exam is written, lasts 30 minutes, and is designed to assess understanding of the topics covered in the course, linguistic proficiency, and the ability to summarise and critically organise information.
The written test will consist of: (a) 15 multiple-choice questions (scoring: 1.5 points per question, maximum 22.5 points) and (b) 1 open-ended question (maximum score: 10 points). Incorrect or unanswered questions will not be penalised.
The final grade will be expressed on a 30-point scale, and a passing grade is achieved with a minimum score of 18/30. A score from 18 to 23 indicates sufficient learning, from 24 to 27 a good level of learning, and from 28 to 30 an excellent level of learning. A grade of “with honours” (cum laude) indicates outstanding analytical and critical reasoning skills regarding the course topics.
The exam is the same for attending and non-attending students.

Students with disabilities, Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), or other Special Educational Needs may benefit from individualized arrangements during examinations, in compliance with current regulations and with the provisions set out in the University Charter of Services (https://www.unich.it/sites/default/files/2024-02/carta_dei_servizi_0.pdf), subject to prior agreement with the course instructor.
