Syllabus

Course Objectives

The aim of the first year is to reach an elementary level of competence in Modern Standard Arabic, both written and spoken. By the end of the course, students will have a basic knowledge of Arabic phonetics and will be able to recognise and reproduce the main sounds of the language, form and understand simple sentences, read and write elementary texts, and translate short texts from Arabic into Italian and from Italian into Arabic.
The achievement of these objectives can be further supported by participation in language tutorial sessions, specifically focused on phonetic practice (which is essential in the first year of learning), the correct articulation of Arabic sounds, the development of basic vocabulary, and conversation and oral production activities.

Teaching Methods

The teaching methodology includes lectures, written and oral exercises carried out both in class and at home, the use of audio and video materials, guided reading and translation activities, and participation in seminars.
Language practice sessions are strongly recommended, as they are specifically designed to develop oral language skills. Particular attention will be devoted to phonetic exercises, which are especially important in the first year, to the correct articulation of Arabic sounds, to the acquisition and consolidation of basic vocabulary, and to conversation and oral production activities.

Assessment Methods

The final exam consists of a written test, including dictation and grammar exercises with translation from Italian into Arabic,designed to assess the application of the rules studied, and an oral exam on the topics covered during the course.

Contents

TThe first year introduces students to the study of Modern Standard Arabic, with particular attention to the writing system, phonetics, and basic morphosyntactic structures, and provides an initial overview of the culture of the Arab world.
