Syllabus
Course Objectives
The General Sociology module, in line with the professional profile of the degree programme, aims to present students with a thematic framework designed to enable them to acquire general sociological knowledge within the field of sociological theory, focusing in particular on the relationship between health and illness, so as to provide students with disciplinary knowledge of the models, theories and scientific tools of social research, as well as the principles of health relating to individuals, communities and the population.
Knowledge and understanding:
Students will acquire a general and professionally oriented theoretical understanding of sociology, social research methodology and the culture of wellbeing, applying this knowledge to the theoretical and practical aspects of the health-illness relationship and to the implementation of interventions and services in the social and healthcare sectors.
Independence of judgement:
With regard to the course topics, students will be required to acquire communication skills and approaches suitable for understanding and conveying social knowledge relating to sociology and social research methods, with the ability to analyse and interpret research models, methods and techniques, as well as to plan and evaluate social and socio-health interventions and policies relating to health and wellbeing.
Communication skills:
Students will acquire communication skills by using disciplinary and scientific terminology and language capable of representing the skills and knowledge learnt during the lectures, particularly in the context of social research methodology and the planning and evaluation of the health-illness relationship.
Learning skills:
The programme aims to equip students with an advanced capacity for critical analysis of the knowledge they have already acquired, including from a scientific perspective for reflective self-learning, covering all possible disciplinary aspects, with a view to developing a comprehensive ability to interact and share processes of meaning-making and to develop metacognitive skills.

Course Prerequisites
The course will also enable students who do not have any specific prior knowledge of the subject to achieve the stated learning objectives. No prior knowledge is required.
Teaching Methods
The course comprises 20 hours of teaching, divided into two 2-hour sessions per week. Teaching will take the form of lectures, seminars featuring experts and professionals, and the use of handouts, slides and other scientific and bibliographical materials for further study during the sessions, including via the e-learning platform.
Assessment Methods
Assessment: Oral examination, consisting of questions relating to the syllabus covered by the lecturer in class and the topics from the prescribed texts discussed during the lectures.
Assessment: marks out of 30.
Assessment of learning will take the form of an oral examination on the course content. The mark, expressed out of 30, is awarded by the lecturer, taking into account the knowledge, competences, skills and abilities (argumentative, logical, discursive, linguistic and communicative) specified in the syllabus, as adequately demonstrated by the student during the examination.
Students with disabilities, specific learning difficulties (SLD) or other special educational needs may benefit from individualised arrangements during examinations, in accordance with the relevant legislation and the provisions of the University’s Service Charter (https://www.unich.it/sites/default/files/2024-02/carta_dei_servizi_0.pdf), subject to prior agreement with the course lecturer. To request compensatory and dispensatory measures, students must contact the CON_TE_STO Service by following the procedure set out in the Service Charter.
Students are encouraged to contact the lecturer during the course, or in any case well in advance of the examination date, to find out about the examination procedures and the measures that are accepted.

Contents
The course offers students a selection of topics and issues, examined from a theoretical and methodological perspective, which are of practical relevance to sociological research, with particular reference to health and illness, both from a historical and evolutionary perspective and in terms of models and interventions within the field of sociology and the protection of the individual from a healthcare, solidarity-based and social perspective.

At the start of the term, students will receive the official course syllabus and the recommended reading list. All information relating to the course, lecture notes, slides, supporting materials and all communications will be provided via:

Upon a reasoned request from an incoming student participating in an international mobility programme (e.g. Erasmus+), the oral examination may be taken in English, subject to agreement with the lecturer responsible for the course.
