Syllabus

Course Objectives

The aim of the course is to provide students with knowledge of the main approaches used in the drug design and development process, with an emphasis on the computational methods used for this purpose.

On completion of the course the student will be able to:
- Use simple molecular modelling software
- Perform database searches on proteins and molecules;
- Perform chemoinformatics analyses;
- Understand the steps in a drug discovery project, taking into account the different factors that drive drug discovery.

Course Prerequisites

The student entering this course should have a good background in organic chemistry and biochemistry.
The course in Pharmaceutical and Toxicological Chemistry I is a prerequisite for attending this course.
The exam can be taken after passing the Pharmaceutical and Toxicological Chemistry I exam.

Teaching Methods

The course consists of 24 hours of face-to-face lectures presenting the different approaches and 36 hours of individual computer exercises applying the same approaches to a case study.

The exercises will be guided by the lecturer who will provide the necessary explanations and materials to carry them out.

Assessment Methods

Preparation will be assessed by an oral interview designed to test the student's effective understanding of the course topics.
The duration of the exam is approximately 30 minutes, but may vary depending on its progress.
The results of the tests taken during the computer exercises will contribute to the final mark.
The student's synthesis, exposition and language skills will contribute to the overall evaluation.

Texts

Lecture slides and additional materials will be provided by the lecturer.
