Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (01/10/2025 - 31/01/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course prepares students to identify, purify, and characterize pharmaceutical compounds through chemical reactions and both instrumental and non-instrumental methods.

Course Prerequisites

The exam requires prior knowledge of the most common organic reaction mechanisms, and of the acid-base and redox reactions. Students must have passed the Analysis of Drugs I exam.

Teaching Methods

The course consists of 40 hours of theoretical lessons, 18 hours of classroom exercises and 30 hours of laboratory exercises. During the theoretical lessons, the topics included in the relevant section of the program will be presented. Seminars held by business experts on the topics covered may also be included. During the classroom exercises, also through the support of the computer, developments of chromatographic methods will be simulated by studying the effect of instrumental variables. Problem solving exercises relating to these topics will be proposed. During the laboratory exercises, drug identification tests and purification procedures will be performed

Assessment Methods

Oral exam. Discussion about the laboratory exercises, as well as about one or more selected topics from the program, including anything relevant to the exercises program. Problem solving exercises or the interpretation of sources and documents of various kinds, spectra, graphs, molecules or other can be included in the oral exam. The final evaluation will be based on the ability to clearly and comprehensively explain the topics covered by the interview and on the ability to apply theoretical concepts to problem solving cases.
