Syllabus

Course Objectives

The teaching of Chemotherapy aims at the study of chemotherapeutics and antibiotics currently used in humans, with particular regard to those of more recent introduction on the market, and to the targeted use of the same.
The aim of the course is to provide student with knowledge in order to acquire skills on antibacterial, antiviral, antiprotozoal, anthelmintic, immunosuppressant, immuno-modulators and antineoplastic drugs. In particular, mechanism and spectrum of action, resistance, kinetics, therapy of infectious and neoplastic diseases, side effects and toxicity, choice of the most appropriate chemoantibiotic, use of chemoantibiotic combinations and role of chemoprophylaxis will be investigated. Also, it provides knowledge on the iatrogenic pathology induced by chemoantibiotics and on chemoantibiotic therapy in neonatal age, in the elderly and in some paraphysiological conditions (pregnancy and breast feeding).

Course Prerequisites

Pharmacology and pharmacotherapy.
Students must possess chemical knowledge (general, organic and analytical) and chemical equilibria in order to calculate the effective and toxic concentrations of xenobiotics in medicines and, subsequently, in body fluids and tissues. They must also know: the etiological bases and pathogenetic mechanisms of diseases; the fundamental aspects of the functions of the main organs and systems; the basics of biology and microbiology in the infective or tumor agent host interactions.

Teaching Methods

Traditional teaching method carried out in the term of lectures, classroom exercises and educational workshops.
Teaching support, seminars and ongoing assessment are planned.

Assessment Methods

The knowledge verification will take place through an oral exam. The topics examined will reflect those covered during the lessons and present in the program. The final mark will be expressed in thirtieths and communicated immediately, at the end of the oral exam. A clear exposition of the topics, with attention to the possible logical connections, as well as the use of an adequate terminology are necessary to pass the exam.

Contents

The course aims to provide student with (and the student is expected to have): knowledge of origin, mechanism of action, action spectrum, resistance, absorption, metabolization, half-life, distribution, elimination, side effects and toxicity of chemoantibiotics, of their use in the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases and of the interactions between chemoantibiotics.
