Course Objectives


The course aims to provide students with conceptual and practical tools to understand, analyze, and interpret the organizational structures of healthcare organizations.
In particular, the course seeks to develop the ability to:
• understand the main models of business organization and their application to the healthcare context;
• critically analyze structures, roles, coordination mechanisms, and decision-making systems;
• examine recurring organizational issues in healthcare organizations;
• formulate organizational improvement proposals consistent with the characteristics of the context.

Teaching Methods


The course will be delivered through a combination of teaching methods aimed at achieving the expected learning outcomes:
• interactive lectures, for the introduction of fundamental theoretical concepts;
• guided discussions, to foster critical interpretation of organizational models;
• analysis of cases and examples drawn from the healthcare context, to apply concepts to realistic situations;
• individual and/or small group exercises, to develop analytical and problem-solving skills;
• participatory activities, aimed at strengthening disciplinary vocabulary and argumentative abilities.
The teaching activities will be oriented not only toward the acquisition of theoretical knowledge, but also toward the development of the ability to read and interpret organizational problems in the healthcare context.


Assessment Methods


Assessment will be carried out through a written exam, structured as follows:
• 13 multiple-choice questions (2 points each), aimed at assessing knowledge of concepts, models, and disciplinary terminology;
• one open-ended question (4 points), aimed at evaluating the ability to analyze, connect, and apply course content to the healthcare context.
The exam is designed to verify the achievement of the expected learning outcomes with reference to:
• understanding of the key concepts of business organization;
• ability to apply models and interpretative frameworks to organizational situations;
• ability to identify critical issues and formulate coherent interpretations;
• clarity of expression and appropriate use of technical language.
Honors (lode) will be awarded only in the absence of errors.
Evaluation criteria
Assessment will take into account the following elements:
• accuracy and completeness of content;
• ability to connect different topics covered in the course;
• relevance of the analysis to the question;
• appropriate use of disciplinary language.

Contents


The Business Organization course, consisting of 15 hours of teaching (1 ECTS), introduces the main topics of organizational design and analysis, with particular reference to healthcare organizations.
The course examines organizations from different levels of analysis — individual, group, organization, and network — focusing on organizational structure, coordination mechanisms, decision-making processes, and typical configurations of the healthcare sector. Particular attention will be devoted to the specific organizational features of healthcare organizations, the criteria for grouping operational units, and the managerial implications of different organizational models.
