Syllabus
Course Objectives
At the end of the course, the student will be able to: Recognize early warning signs of obstetric risk and promptly initiate appropriate emergency interventions. Apply up-to-date clinical protocols in the management of major obstetric emergencies, including hypertensive disorders, hemorrhage, dystocia, and maternal cardiorespiratory events. Perform a critical assessment of care priorities within obstetric triage. Collaborate effectively in interdisciplinary settings to ensure a coordinated and integrated care response. Provide empathetic, informed, and culturally sensitive support to women and families experiencing grief, loss, or traumatic events. Actively participate in post-event debriefing sessions and understand the importance of caring for the healthcare team as well.
Course Prerequisites
The student is required to have acquired knowledge of the fundamental concepts of labor, birth, and postpartum care, as well as the physiological changes during pregnancy and the postpartum period, and pregnancy hygiene
Teaching Methods
Lectures will be delivered in person in the classroom, except in exceptional circumstances when remote teaching via the Teams platform may be used. The course content will be presented using digital support (PowerPoint slides).
Assessment Methods
the faculty through an oral examination conducted by a panel on the official exam dates of the integrated course. The final grade will be expressed on a scale of 30 points, increasing according to the student’s demonstrated level of knowledge, use of appropriate terminology, logical reasoning, and coherence in presentation: Basic but incomplete knowledge: score between 18 and 22/30 Fair knowledge and clear presentation: score between 23 and 25/30 Good knowledge with appropriate language and command of the subject: score between 26 and 28/30 Excellent knowledge and presentation skills, with critical thinking: score between 28 and 30/30 Honors (“cum laude”) may be awarded to students who demonstrate particularly in-depth knowledge, exceptional communication skills, and advanced critical reasoning

This module addresses the main obstetric emergencies and urgent situations that may arise during the childbirth process. It focuses on the early identification of risk signs, prompt clinical management, interdisciplinary communication, and emotional support for women and their families in highly critical contexts. A specific section of the course is also dedicated to the psychological and relational aspects associated with adverse events and perinatal loss.
