Course Objectives


At the end of the course, students will:


be able to read, write, understand, and speak Portuguese (at the B2/C1 level) in its Brazilian variety;

be able to apply the knowledge acquired to sociolinguistic issues, developing effective strategies to enhance linguistic awareness. The course aims to foster a critical understanding of the linguistic and cultural situation in Portuguese-speaking countries where Creole languages are spoken, as well as of the history of Portuguese linguistic colonialism.

Achieving the B2/C1 level of instrumental competence, together with the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the course, will enable students to understand and produce written and oral texts on linguistic topics, as well as to analyze original texts through the application of the concepts learned.

Course Prerequisites


In order to sit the examination for the Portuguese and Brazilian Linguistics, Language and Translation III course, it is necessary to have completed the Portuguese and Brazilian Linguistics, Language and Translation I and II examinations in all their componen

Teaching Methods


Classes take place in person and make use of audiovisual materials (slides, videos, and recordings) as well as textbooks for learning Portuguese as a foreign language (PLE). The Teams platform will be used to facilitate teacher–student interaction and to share materials distributed during institutional lectures, language practice sessions, bibliographic references, and other supporting resources. The lecturer and the language assistant will arrange their in-person and online office hours, which will be communicated to students at the beginning of the semester. Conferences and meetings with specialists will also be organized.

Assessment Methods


The final grade will be a single mark resulting from the overall assessment of the various activities, which include:


Institutional Course: three mid-term written tests (not compulsory), one for each topic covered in class (Creole Studies; Syntax; and Semantics). At the end of the course, students who have successfully passed all three written tests will be admitted to the final oral exam. Those who either do not take the mid-term tests or fail to pass them will be required to sit a comprehensive written exam on the entire contents of the institutional course, before proceeding to the oral exam. Further details will be provided during the course and office hours.

Contents


Course (Dr. Matteo Migliorelli):
The course on Portuguese-based Creoles aims to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the historical, social, and linguistic contexts in which these languages emerged. It explores the contact dynamics that led to the formation of Portuguese Creoles in Africa, the Gulf of Guinea, and Asia. Through theoretical and methodological tools, the course examines typological, morphosyntactic, phonological, and lexical aspects of the Creoles, as well as the processes of pidginization and creolization. Particular attention is given to the sociolinguistic and political dimensions of Creoles, viewed as expressions of identity and cultural resistance. Finally, the course promotes a critical approach that acknowledges Creoles as autonomous and fully legitimate linguistic systems, essential for understanding linguistic contact and change.
Instrumental Language Course (Dr. Wânia Beloni):
The course aims to achieve a B2/C1 level of instrumental language proficiency, as established by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Written and oral practice sessions with the language assistant will provide students with the tools to acquire, refine, and strengthen the linguistic and communicative competences required for the indicated level. The course focuses on learning Portuguese in its Brazilian variety (PB).
