Course Objectives


1) Understanding the importance of correctly managing the tests performed and the management of positive cases after the first level investigation; 2) Understanding the methodological path of the different technologies that can be used for the diagnosis of neoplasms in the 3 population screenings. 3) Following the achievement of objectives 1 and 2, the ability to understand the importance of prevention and therefore the diffusion of the culture of screening tests will result.

Course Prerequisites


Students must have a basic knowledge of normal macroscopic and microscopic anatomy and mastery of the main concepts relating to the physiology of organs.

Teaching Methods


Interactive lectures will be held with the aid of iconographic material in Power Point files for a total of 10 hours, to be integrated with the study of the handouts provided by the teacher.

Assessment Methods


The exam is a written test. The test consists of 15 open-ended questions, with 2 points awarded for each correct answer. The test is passed if at least 9 correct answers are given.

Knowledge of the importance of screening, a diagnostic investigation carried out by subjecting the population to a test aimed at detecting a specific tumor. The aim of screening is to subject healthy people to preventive tests to identify cancer cases in the early, asymptomatic stages or in the pre-cancerous stages, when more conservative interventions are possible and the chances of recovery are higher than when the tumor has already manifested itself. Knowledge of the 3 screening tests that are included in the Essential Levels of Assistance (LEA) in the Italian National Health System (NHS), consisting of: cervical screening, breast screening, and colorectal screening. Knowledge of the technologies and methods used to obtain the results of the first level of investigation. Knowledge of the molecular analytical system and genotyping for cervical screening, analytical method for the detection of occult blood in the stool for colorectal screening, and mammography examination for breast screening. Knowledge of the screening process in the second level of investigation.
