Syllabus

Course Objectives


The course introduces students to English linguistics from a synchronic and diachronic perspective. Specific attention will be drawn to the frameworks of linguistic analysis, the history of the English language, the feminist perspective on the English language. Students are expected to acquire ground skills enabling them to the study of the English language and its main linguistic features. They will be able to examine a text from a phonological, morphological, syntactical, and lexical point of view. Students will also be expected to acquire basic methodological competences for linguistic analysis, also from a feminist perspective. Students must be able to process and relate the course contents in English. They are also expected to acquire basic specialized vocabulary for linguistic analysis.

Course Prerequisites


Students are expected to possess a level of competence in English corresponding to the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference.

Teaching Methods


Lectures and debates: students are expected to take an active part in the class activities. Lectures will be integrated with seminars and/or task-based activities.

Assessment Methods


The oral exam assesses the students’ knowledge of the course contents/reading list, their critical thinking skills, their ability to apply theoretical concepts to linguistic analysis, and their ability to communicate in English. Attending students may replace part of the reading list with a PPT presentation (ca. 8 slides) on one of the course topics. The PPT presentation will be discussed during classes and will be part of the final evaluation during the exam. Students will be graded as follows: 1-17 fail; 18-21 satisfactory; 22-24 fairly good; 25-27 good; 28-29 very good; 30-30l excellent.

The course provides an introduction to English linguistics with a focus on linguistic analysis, history of the English language, and feminist linguistics.
