Course Objectives


Learning Outcomes
This course contributes to the overall educational objectives of the degree program, specifically along the following lines:Knowledge and Understanding
Upon completion of this course, students will:


Possess a comprehensive understanding of the general history of 20th-century cinema and music, including key figures, genres, and the contexts and functions of music within audiovisual texts.

Grasp the foundational theoretical concepts necessary for an informed appreciation of syncretic cinematic texts.

Understand the fundamentals of musical dramaturgy, with a particular focus on cinematic narration.

Be familiar with essential aspects and concepts of music from the late 19th and 20th centuries (e.g., Wagnerism, symphonism, atonality, neoclassicism, minimalism) and cinema from the Lumières to the present day (e.g., silent and sound film, illustration and asynchronous sound, editing and counterpoint).
Applying Knowledge and Understanding
Students will be able to:


Navigate the historical development of film music.

Develop a multidisciplinary approach, enabling them to contextualize the evolution of the musical component by comparing it with film history, the development of cinematic aesthetics, and other art forms, particularly painting, theatre, and literature.
Making Judgements
By the end of the course, students will:


Cultivate a critical sensibility towards music and audiovisual texts, informed by their knowledge of cinematic and musical history, the development of informed engagement with audiovisual texts, and an engagement with significant works in cinema history.
Communication Skills
Students will be able to:


Articulate course content and key concepts clearly and using appropriate terminology, demonstrating the ability to draw connections between them and make interdisciplinary links.

Effectively report on listening and viewing experiences gained both during lectures and through independent study.

Course Prerequisites


Prerequisites and Recommended Preparatory Reading
No specific prerequisites are required for this course. Any necessary basic technical concepts will be covered during lectures.
However, for students wishing to acquire foundational knowledge in advance, the following optional resources are suggested:

For the history of 20th-century music, please refer to:


Carrozzo, Mario, and Cristina Cimagalli. Storia della musica occidentale (History of Western Music), Vol. III. Armando, 1997 (and subsequent reprints). This text includes a glossary of musical terms at the end.

For the history of cinema, please refer to:


Rondolino, Gianni, and Dario Tomasi. Manuale di storia del cinema (Manual of Film History). UTET, 2014.

Teaching Methods


The course will be delivered through frontal lessons, incorporating listening and viewing exercises, as well as the use of slides and supplementary printed materials.
All lecture materials will be made available to students at the end of the course.

Assessment Methods


La prova finale consiste in un esame orale sui contenuti del corso, con voto finale in trentesimi. Verranno valutati la conoscenza dei contenuti e della bibliografia previsti dal corso, la qualità dell’espressione orale, le capacità critiche e metodologiche. Il punteggio va da 1 a 30 con lode, secondo quanto segue: 1-17 insufficiente, 18 -21 sufficiente, 22-24 discreto, 25-27 buono, 28-29 molto buono, 30-30 con lode eccellente.
