Syllabus

Course Objectives

The main objective of the course is the acquisition and consolidation of the language skills required at the B1 level of the CEFR. By the end of the course, the student will be able to understand the main points of clear messages in standard language on familiar topics that they normally encounter at work, school, in their free time, etc., and in many situations that may arise while traveling in a region where the language is spoken. They will be able to describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes, ambitions, and briefly explain reasons and provide explanations for opinions and plans.
The analysis of authentic texts aims to develop reading, comprehension, and language production skills with the help of glossaries and through exercises focused on vocabulary and language registers.

Course Prerequisites

CEFR A2 level.

Teaching Methods

The coursebook provides the guidelines for the program and the activities that will be carried out. These will be adapted to the characteristics of the group and integrated with other materials. The lessons will be mainly practical and conducted in English. Students are encouraged to participate actively in order to develop their communication skills. New vocabulary will be presented in the context of real-life situations. New structures will be briefly introduced and analyzed, followed by controlled exercises and free practice to facilitate learning and acquisition. Special emphasis will be placed on the use of authentic materials for individual study.
The use of materials drawn from a variety of authentic texts will enable students to quickly gain mastery of grammatical structures while also acquiring specialized vocabulary.

Assessment Methods

The exam includes a written test with a Reading comprehension exercise, a listening comprehension exercise, a multiple choice cloze exercise, and multiple choice questions related to the topics covered during the lessons. The test will last 75 minutes and will be held in person at the Chieti Campus. The use of dictionaries and/or other paper supports is not allowed. The exam sessions, one per session (sessione anticipata, estiva, autunnale e straordinaria), are open to both attending and non-attending students.

Texts

A handout will be provided by the lecturer and uploaded to the Moodle platform along with additional material for home exercises.

Contents

The English language workshop includes the reinforcement of the language abilities as indicated in the B1 level descriptors of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). There will be reading and listening comprehension exercises, speaking activities and the study of grammar structures as well as the lexis related to specific subject areas.
Authentic texts will be analyzed, drawn from books, newspapers, magazines, periodicals, and websites covering specific fields such as archaeology, art, conservation, library science, and cultural heritage legislation.
