Syllabus

Course Objectives

The teaching will contribute to the achievement of the learning objectives of the Course of study in Literature, in particular along the following lines:
Knowledge and Understanding
Knowledge of the main lines of evolution of Italian and of Italo-romance dialectal varieties, in their phonological, morphological, syntactic and lexical aspects; knowledge of the debate on the question of language over the centuries; awareness of the dynamics of linguistic variation, according to the diatopic, diastratic, diaphasic and diamesic axes (as expected by learning objectives of the Course).
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
Ability to conduct field research in linguistics, collecting and analyzing first-hand data; ability to analyze a text linguistically, even through specialized tools, managing to hypothesize its geographical area, the historical period it belongs to, and indentifying its features and specificity from the textual point of view (as expected by learning objectives of the Course).
Autonomy of Judgment
Acquisition of autonomy of judgment in the linguistic analysis of a text in Italian, with the ability to verify hypothesis on the provenance, the historical phase of belonging, the typology of the writer, also through the retrieval of the ad hoc bibliography (as expected by learning objectives of the Course).
Communication Skills
Ability to draft, extend, reduce or correct a written text for its employment for work purposes (journalism, advertising, cultural dissemination); ability to produce written and oral texts adapted to the various communicative situations and to expound the contents of the discipline both to specialist and lay audience (as expected by learning objectives of the Course).
Learning Capacity
Preparation for study and research both for access to a master's degree course and for the purposes of employment in the journalistic, advertising, scientific, institutional and cultural dissemination fields (as expected by learning objectives of the Course).

Teaching Methods


72 hours, subdivided into teacher up front lessons, exercises and seminars.

Assessment Methods

Oral exam with marks out of 30, aimed at verifying the ability to expose the arguments presented during the course with clarity and autonomy of judgment. The grading scale goes from 1 to 30 with honours (cum laude): 1-17 fail, 18-21 sufficient, 22-24 fair, 25-27 good, 28-29 very good, 30-30 with honours (cum laude) excellent.

Contents

The course aims to provide a picture of the history of the Italian language, paying particular attention to the evolution of Italian linguistic structures starting from the first vulgar documents up to the contemporary and dealing the main arguments of the theoretical debate on the question of language. In the in-depth module will be examined the history and the features of regional italian.
