Syllabus

Course Objectives

The teaching will contribute to the achievement of the learning objectives of the Course of study in Literature, in particular along the following lines: Knowledge and comprehension Knowledge of the main principles of socio-linguistics (linguistic variety, dialect, variation, norm, bilingualism, diglossia, linguistic code); Knowledge of the classification of the Italo-Romance linguistic area and of its varieties; Knowledge of the main phonological, morphological and syntactic characteristics of the Italo-Romance dialects; Knowledge of the methodology of field research and data gathering in dialectological studies. Capability of applying knowledge and comprehension Capability of use correctly linguistic terminology concerning the internal and external phenomena of the Italo-Romance varieties; Capability of read a linguistic map and recognize the main isoglosses; Capability of recognize the linguistic features of the main Italo-Romance varieties; Capability of apply the methodologies of dialectological research. Judgement ability Ability to examine a dialectal text and reconstruct its linguistic origin. Communicative abilities Ability to communicate the specific characteristics of the Italo-Romance dialects, by making use of a convenient scientific terminology. Learning abilities Ability to study critically the reference texts.

Course Prerequisites

Knowledge of the fundamental notions of Italian linguistic history and Italian historical grammar, acquired through the course of History of the Italian Language.

Teaching Methods

42 hours (6 CFU) or 63 hours (9 CFU), subdivided into teacher up front lessons, exercises and seminars.

Assessment Methods

Oral exam with marks out of 30, aimed at verifying the ability to expose the arguments presented during the course with clarity and autonomy of judgment. The grading scale goes from 1 to 30 with honours (cum laude): 1-17 fail, 18-21 sufficient, 22-24 fair, 25-27 good, 28-29 very good, 30-30 with honours (cum laude) excellent

1) Carla Marcato, Dialetto, dialetti e italiano, Bologna, Il Mulino, 2007. 2) Francesco Avolio, Lingue e dialetti d'Italia, Roma, Carocci, 2023 (or previuos edition). Non attending students will replace Avolio's book with Michele Loporcaro, Profilo linguistico dei dialetti italiani, Roma-Bari, Laterza, 2009. 3) Only for 9 CFU students: Marco Di Giacomo, Italiano e dialetto a scuola in Abruzzo tra Otto e Novecento, Firenze, Cesati, 2025.

Contents

After introducing some general notions of sociolinguistics and geolinguistics (language, dialect, linguistic variety, repertoire, continuum, linguistic area and isogloss), we will reflect on the vitality of dialect in Italian society and review the methods, tools and techniques of dialectological research. The second part of the course will present a classification and an internal description of the main dialectal types in Italy. The in-depth module will examine the presence of dialect in teaching between the 19th and the 20th centuries, with particular references to Abruzzo.
