Course Objectives


The teaching contributes to the realization of the educational objective of the Course of Study in Dietetics by providing students with knowledge about signs and symptoms, diagnostic procedures and therapeutic indications in the pathologies of the nephropathic patient, consistent with the profile Professional of Dietician.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the Teaching the students will be able to:
a) In reference to the signs-symptoms of proteinuria, hematuria, oliguria, polyuria, peripheral edema:illustrate the individual physiopathological mechanisms; list the clinical significance and the main causes; plan a correct diagnostic procedure.

b) To interpret the possible results in a physiopathological and diagnostic key urinalysis.
c) Specify indications and contraindications, complications, costs, reliability of the main specialist diagnostic procedures: renal function test, urine culture, renal biopsy, diagnostic imaging, laboratory diagnostics.
d) With reference to systematic nosography:
- Know, based on epidemiological information, which are the most frequent pathologies affecting the urinary tract.
- Differentiate and interpret the physiopathological elements of semeiology clinic for a correct classification of diseases.
- Specify the pathogenetic role of the main risk factors.
- Knowing how to analyze the clinical and instrumental data to make a correct diagnosis and setting up a therapeutic scheme

Apply the acquired competences in the nutritional setting, taking into account theories/models/structures and updated scientific evidences

Use of acquired knowledges whenever needed to appropriately evaluate and judge a process, a situation or an activity in the referral setting

Communicate clearly and accurately our own thoughts with an appropriate language to argue the message in various relationship and in different contexts

Develop autonomous ability to learn and update, individuate areas of improvement

Course Prerequisites


Prerequisites
anatomy and histology of the genitourinary system;
general concepts of physiology of the genito-urinary system;
general concepts of diagnostic imaging of the genitourinary system;



Teaching Methods


Classroom lessons for all students

Exercises in small groups during the attendance in the department of Clinica Nefrologica.


Assessment Methods


Testing of Learning, by means of oral interview (vote in thirties), focus on the evaluation of an adequate knowledge by the student of renal diseases (pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, diagnostic procedures, nutritional approaches), consistent with the professional profile of Dietician

It is proposed to provide students with adequate knowledge, related to:

1) Diagnostic use of the interpreted nephro-urological signs and symptoms in relation to their physiopathogenesis.
2) Pathophysiological, laboratory and instrumental diagnostic procedures and their indications in nephrological diseases.
3) Systematic nosology of the main nephrological diseases.
4) Basic concepts concerning the criteria and indications of the renal replacement therapy
5) Main techniques of substitution therapy of renal function in intensive care units.
