Course Objectives

LEARNING OBJECTIVESThe course is inserted within the specific objectives of the study program whose aim is to provide the students with the theoretical and methodological basis of scientific training in the psychological field, supporting them with an appropriate training in biomedical sciences.Therefore, in short, this course psychopharmacology aims to allow the student to develop knowledge on the pharmacological basis of the therapy. This will be reached through an integration of notions related to pharmacokinetics, molecular mechanism of action and the interaction of single classes of drugs with the pathophysiological and molecular mechanisms of the main psychopathologies for which the above drugs are proposed.Finally, the course aims to allow the student to develop knowledge on the mechanisms of action of the most frequently used substances of abuse and on their pharmacological treatment.EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMESAt the end of the course the student, as far as he is competent, will be able: i) to know the pharmacological basis of the therapy of the main psychopathologies; ii) to know the main behavioral and / or unwanted effects of psychotropic drugs and the most common drugs of abuse; iii) to know the potential interactions between psychotropic drugs and between psychotropic drugs and psychotherapies (e.g. cognitive-behavioral therapy); iv) to understand the biological reasons underlying the variability of drug response and the critical importance of adherence to therapy.The course will help to provide the student with tools that will enable him to improve his/her skills in relating to other professional figures (medical doctors, nurses) who, in an increasingly multidisciplinary approach, will be called to take care of the patient.

Course Prerequisites

The student must have basic knowledge of neurobiology, neuroanatomy and physiology.

Teaching Methods

The teaching is divided into lectures whose purpose is to transmit concepts, information and schemes.

Assessment Methods

The student must register for the examination session on Esse3. The level of learning related to the teaching takes place in written form with 16 multiple-choice questions (each question has 4 answers, of which only one is correct) involving the areas of general pharmacology and special pharmacology present in the program. The test is administered on paper, and it must be completed within 20 minutes. The test result is communicated through the Esse3 system. The exam mode and the evaluation method are indicated by the teacher at the beginning of the lessons.

Texts

Consultation of specific chapters on classic pharmacology texts such as :
"Psicofarmacoterapia clinca", Authors: Michela Raja e Sivia Raja- Edizioni Minerva Medica-
“Psicofarmacologia per Psicologi”, Authors: C Faravelli, Ed. Il Mulino (ultima edizione);
For further information: “Farmacologia: principi di base e applicazioni terapeutiche” F Rossi, V Cuomo, C Riccardi (the most recent edition).

Contents

The course includes two sections:1) General Pharmacology: this section briefly describes the principles that underlie the human-drug interactions. The section, in its turn, is divided into two chapters, one relating to Pharmacokinetics (the effects that the body exerts on drugs) and the other relating to Pharmacodynamics (the cellular and molecular mechanisms that underlie the therapeutic, undesirable and toxic effects of drugs) that account for the effects of drugs active at the level of the Central Nervous System.2) Special Pharmacology: this section describes the characteristics of the single classes of drugs with particular reference to those active at the level of the Central Nervous System of the widest clinical use.
