The course provides an introduction to conservation and restoration, basic topics in the training of the architect, according to the Italian tradition. The course points to the formation of a sensitivity able to listen to past cultures and to respect the signs and testimonies, in the context of contemporary design.
Course Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of the history of architecture and general themes of history and Italian culture.
Teaching Methods
The course is conducted through oral presentations that illustrate specific historic restorations, trying to reconstruct the situation and the cultural context that govern every action.
Assessment Methods
The final examination is carried out through an oral examination on the topics presented during the course. There are exercises and multiple choice quizzes during the course to evaluate learning and the impact of the proposed topics.

Contents
The course offers a summary of the main issues related to the conservation and management of the built heritage, as an introduction to the design in the field of architectural conservation. The program begins with a review of case studies from Middle Ages and the modern era; it therefore focuses on the issue of restoration in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, through the illustration of works and theoretical positions; it culminates in the presentation of the contemporary debate, through discussion of projects and restored buildings.
