Syllabus

Course Objectives

The degree laboratory in Risk Planning aims to develop fundamental theoretical and practical skills for students. In particular, it seeks to provide a solid theoretical foundation on the principles of territorial and environmental planning, with a specific focus on risk management. Through laboratory activities, students will have the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge to real cases, thereby developing practical skills.
Another objective of the laboratory is the analysis of natural and anthropogenic risks. Students will be guided in understanding and analyzing the main natural risks, such as landslides, floods, and wildfires, as well as anthropogenic risks, such as pollution and unsustainable resource use. Furthermore, they will learn to assess the potential impact of these risks on communities and the environment.
The laboratory also focuses on the development of mitigation strategies. Students will be trained in designing effective strategies for risk mitigation, taking into account territorial specificities and the needs of local communities. An integrated approach will be promoted that combines technical, regulatory, and socio-economic measures to ensure safety and sustainability.
Additionally, the laboratory includes the design of integrated solutions. Students will be guided in creating innovative interventions and solutions to improve the resilience of the territory to identified risks, ensuring that proposals are environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable.
Finally, the laboratory will offer a field experience using the Maiella National Park as a testing ground (or any other territories suggested by students and agreed upon with the instructor). Students will analyze the geomorphological, ecological, and cultural diversity of the chosen area while working on planning processes that address the challenges of multiple risks in the context of the park (or other agreed-upon areas). This approach will foster experiential learning that further enriches their education in preparation for their thesis.

Course Prerequisites

Having attended and passed the exam of "Pianificazione del Rischio".

Teaching Methods

The laboratory will be divided into didactic and operational modules, distributed over an academic semester. The activities will be carried out through lectures, practical exercises, site visits, group work and specialized seminars.

Assessment Methods

Students will be required to prepare territorial analysis papers that integrate the theoretical and practical knowledge acquired during the course. The papers should include:
- Territorial Analysis: a description of the physical, social, and economic characteristics of the studied area.
- Risk Identification: an analysis of the potential risks (natural and anthropogenic) present in the territory.
- Mitigation Measures Planning: concrete proposals for the management and reduction of identified risks.
Evaluation Criteria
- Completeness and accuracy of the analysis.
- Ability to integrate data and information from various sources.
- Originality and feasibility of the proposed interventions.

Contents

The laboratory aims to develop theoretical and practical skills in the field of territorial and environmental planning, with particular reference to risk management in natural and anthropized contexts. Students will be guided in understanding the main natural and anthropic risks, in developing mitigation strategies and in designing integrated solutions for the safety and sustainability of the territory. The Maiella National Park, with its geomorphological, ecological and cultural diversity, will be the testing ground for the entire laboratory.
