Course Objectives

The objectives of the pharmacology course are such that the future dentist should acquire, during the course of training:
• the pharmacological knowledge necessary to prescribe and administer medicines commonly used in dentistry, with full understanding of their composition, primary and secondary effects, and indications; • a solid knowledge, from the perspective of professional practice, of the primary and secondary effects and contraindications of medicines that the patient may be taking for other medical treatments; • the skills required to perform local anaesthesia and analgesia in dental practice, as well as the knowledge and skills necessary to prescribe pre- and post-operative medicines aimed at reducing pain and anxiety; • adequate knowledge of drugs used in medical and dental emergency care, as well as the ability to manage such situations.

Course Prerequisites

Having successfully passed all the examinations of the second year of the Degree Programme.

Teaching Methods

Lectures delivered with the aid of PowerPoint slides, which will be regularly provided to students as a study guide, to be used in conjunction with a textbook.

Assessment Methods

The final assessment consists of an oral examination aimed at evaluating the knowledge acquired by the student at the end of the course.

In order to stimulate interest and learning, it has been considered appropriate to offer students, during the course period, the opportunity to take a number of written assessments, structured so as to ensure, in a balanced manner and through concise answers and/or single-answer multiple-choice tests, an objective evaluation of the achievement of the Core Curriculum learning objectives. Participation in the in-course assessments is not to be considered mandatory.

• general mechanisms of drug action at the level of organs and systems, as well as at the cellular, biochemical, and molecular levels; • routes of drug administration and the fate of drugs in the body, including processes of biotransport, biotransformation and metabolic bioactivation, distribution, and excretion of drugs; • general mechanisms underlying the development of toxic effects and general criteria for their prevention; • possible causes of abnormal drug responses and mechanisms of interaction between two or more drugs; • pharmacological characteristics of the different classes of agents commonly used in dental practice, with reference to their mechanism of action and fate in the body, as well as criteria for differentiating between molecules within the same class, also considering potential toxicity and the patient’s physiopathological characteristics.
