Syllabus

Course Objectives

To learn the pathophysiology, differential diagnosis and principles of treatment of main diseases within Internal Medicine, in order to:1. integrate and contextualize knowledge and skills in clinical pharmacology and medical therapy;2. acquire skill on medications, to be used as a pharmacist in health care settings, in the preparation of medicines for industry, in the control of drugs within public and private laboratories, in the production and control of medical devices, evaluation and technical compilation of pharmaceutical dossiers for authorization to market new drugs, dissemination of information and advice in the field of medicines, cosmetic, dietary and nutritional products.EXPECTED LEARNING RESULTS Knowledge and understanding: At the end of the course the students will be able to: a) know the etiopathogenesis and naming principles of human diseases, with knowledge of medical terminology; b) know the clinical presentation and natural history of acute and chronic diseases, characteristics, mechanisms of action and indications for use of drugs;c) apply knowledge in order to: - formulate one or more diagnostic hypotheses on the basis of the patient's symptoms and clinical history; - identify the laboratory tests and the necessary instrumental procedures; - interpret the results, in light of the symptoms and of the clinical history, in order to arrive at the correct diagnosis, after excluding alternative diagnostic hypotheses;- set the most appropriate therapeutic strategies for the patient's health problems, applying the principles of evidence-based medicine. Autonomy of judgment - decide on personalized assistance interventions on the basis of clinical, psychosocial and cultural variables - critically evaluate the decisions of care taken on the basis of patient outcomes and standard of care - take decisions through a scientific approach of problems solving Communication skills - use appropriate communication skills with users of all ages and their families in the care process and / or with other health professionals in appropriate verbal, non-verbal and written form

Course Prerequisites

Anatomy, Physiology and General Pathology represent propedeutic exams. Pharmacology would be useful, although not compulsory

Teaching Methods

The teaching is structured on 38 hours of frontal teaching, divided into two hours lessons, according to the academic calendar. Each lesson is carried out with the help of ppt, and will be interactive I order to verify the student's learning and the pre-existing skills. Attendance is compulsory for 70% of class hours

Assessment Methods

Oral examination, based on at least two large subjects within the program. For each topic, the student should be able to refer about pathogenesis, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis and treatment. The ability to link different topics and make differential diagnosis will be also evaluated. Finally, the effort of the student to gain deeper insight into the topics with the help of text books will be unravelled.The final score will be the average of the marks given by the commission at each question.
