Course Objectives

The course aims at introducing the student to the molecular basis and pathophysiology of diseases. To provide the student with the tools to understand human diseases, particularly relevant pathologies are illustrated, both because they are frequent and constitute important pathology models. As part of the course, some iatrogenic pathologies and examples of molecular mechanisms implicated in adverse drug reactions are also introduced. Topics covered include: general etiology, pathophysiology, genetic and molecular pathology, physical, chemical and biological agents as causes of disease, drug-related pathologies, inflammation, fever, immunology, oncology, atherosclerosis.

Course Prerequisites

The student must have basic knowledge acquired in the courses of Human Anatomy, General Physiology, Animal Biology and Plant Biology, concerning the anatomy, physiology and biology of humans in non-pathological conditions. Introductory notes on anatomy, physiology and biology are however referred to in the lessons of the General Pathology course, where appropriate, to facilitate understanding of the course topics.

Teaching Methods

The 11 credits of the course are organized as follows: 10 credits are provided through classroom lectures and 1 CFU is awarded by offering the student both laboratory experiences and bibliographic research activities in the biomedical field, which will be held, respectively, in equipped and dedicated laboratories to molecular and cellular biology and in a classroom equipped with several computer stations.

Assessment Methods

The final exam consists of an oral test during which the student is asked questions on specific topics among those described in the detailed program. The final evaluation is carried out on the basis of the precision and the level of depth with which the student replies to the questions asked, also in relation to the expected learning.
