Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course is meant to contribute to reaching the learning objectives of the MA programme. More specifically, it aims to provide students with a basic knowledge of Mediaeval and Humanistic Latin.

- Expected learning results:
1) knowledge of the course subjects;
2) ability to critically discuss specific case-studies;
3) communication skills.

Course Prerequisites

No prerequisite is needed (but a basic knowledge of Classical Latin would be suggested).

Teaching Methods

The course consists of lectures (42 hours). Students will be tested to assess their learning.

Assessment Methods

The final assessment consists of an oral exam on the entire syllabus. The aim is to assess the students’ skills and in particular their understanding of the issues discussed during the course, their knowledge of the bibliography in the reading list, the correct command of the specific language as well as of critical and methodological abilities. The grading scale ranges from 1 to 30 with honours (cum laude): 1-17 fail, 18-21 sufficient, 22-24 fair, 25-27 good, 28-29 very good, 30-30 with honours (cum laude) excellent.

Contents

The Course will focus on latin texts by Petrarch (1304-74) devoted to the figure of his beloved Laura. We will read and analyse the texts (full italian translations are provided in bibliography), in order to study both their lingustical features and their historical content.

Attendance to this course is highly recommended. Students who cannot attend the course are requested to make an appointment with the teacher and must also study essays in addition to the program as suggested by the teacher.
