Syllabus

Course Objectives

Upon completion of the course the student will be able to:
1. Read and comment on the vernacular documents analyzed in class;
2. identify and contextualize various types of documentary sources in the different vernacular romances (ability to apply knowledge);
3. comment on a geolinguistic map (ability to apply knowledge);
4. identify and critically analyze the linguistic, formal, intrisic and extrinsic elements of each documentary source (judgment skills);
5. place a vernacular document in the relevant linguistic area and historical period (judgment skills);
6. describe the causes for the choice of vernacular in a given source (communication skills).

Lectures and exercises on reading and exegesis of documentary sources in the vernacular texts

Assessment Methods

Oral examination and possible written test on the way (optional)

the course aims to provide knowledge about the genesis, development and establishment of Romance languages in European territories and their expansion into non-European territories from the late Roman period to the contemporary age.
The diachronic approach involves the general description of the emergence and spread of Neo-Latin languages and the analysis of individual linguistic profiles (Ibero-Romance, Galloromance, Italo-Romance idioms) through the milestones of Romance linguistic history
