Syllabus

Course Objectives

The syllabus aims at deepening and expanding the Students’ knowledge about some themes regarding Italian history during the Republican age, starting from the second post-war period. Referring to the general objectives, and taking into account the objectives of the BA program, at the end of the course the students will have to reach a critical attitude which allows them to evaluate the cause-effect relationships of the historical events; they will have to analyze historical phenomena; to compare historical events; to carry out a scientific research; to make comparisons with other disciplines on some historical aspects (such as Literature or Anthropology). As regards the specific objectives of the discipline, students will have to gain a correct command of the specific historical language related to the course contents; they will have to carry out archival research; to know the historiography about specific themes; they will have to collect bibliographic material and information; to grasp connections of events; to prepare a history lesson on a set theme; to report to the working group on a specific topic; to write a text with notes; to know how to analyze a political case in a critical way.

Course Prerequisites

It is desirable, but not necessary, that the students have already taken an exam in Contemporary History

Teaching Methods

Lectures for 42 hours. Use of computer and video-projector. Visit to an archive. A film screening related to the course.

Assessment Methods

The final assessment consists of an oral exam on the entire syllabus. The aim is to assess the students’ skills and in particular their understanding of the issues discussed during the course, their knowledge of the bibliography in the reading list, the correct command of the specific language as well as of critical and methodological abilities. The grading scale ranges from 1 to 30 and 30 with honours (cum laude): 1-17 fail, 18-21 sufficient, 22-24 fair, 25-27 good, 28-29 very good, 30-30 with honours (cum laude) excellent.

Students, who did not take an exam in Contemporary History in their undergraduate program, are requested to contact the professor for a specific reading list.

The course aims at analysing the difficult path in reconstructing the Italian State in the post-war period, from the political as well as the social points of view. Particular emphasis will be given to the process of legitimation carried on by the Italian political parties and to the present difficult relationship between politics and citizens.
