Syllabus

Course Objectives


The course constitutes an introduction to the themes of conservation and restoration, aiming at the formation of a sensitivity capable of understanding the cultures of the past and respecting their signs and testimonies.


Course Prerequisites


Basic knowledge of the history of architecture and general themes of history and Italian culture.


Teaching Methods


The course is conducted through oral presentations that illustrate specific historic restorations, trying to reconstruct the situation and the cultural context that govern every action.


Assessment Methods


The final examination is carried out through an oral examination on the topics presented during the course. There are exercises and multiple choice quizzes during the course to evaluate learning and the impact of the proposed topics.

Contents


The course offers a summary of the main themes related to the conservation and management of built heritage. The program starts from a review of exemplary cases between the Middle Ages and the modern age; it therefore focuses on the story of restoration in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, through the illustration of works and theoretical positions; ends with the exposition of the contemporary debate, through the discussion of representative projects and construction sites.
