Syllabus

Course Objectives


This teaching contributes to the learning outcomes for the degree course in Philology, Linguistics and Literary Traditions, providing extensive knowledge of the history and theory of serial narratives.

Knowledge

Once the course is completed, students will have acquired a solid knowledge of the main methods used in the analysis of serial narratives. Students will become familiar with of the key aspect of seriality, and they will be able to discuss them from both a historical and a theorical perspective.

Critical thinking

Students will be able to use the tools they have acquired to offer stylistic analyses of serial narratives offered by mass media.

Communication skills

Students will be able to discuss the key aspects of the history and the theory of serial narratives.

Teaching Methods


This teaching (taught lessons) is 42 hours long.


Assessment Methods


The final assessment consists of an oral exam on the entire syllabus. The aim is to assess students’ skills and in particular, an understanding of the issues discussed during the course, an appropriate knowledge of the bibliography in the course programme, critical and methodological abilities and communication skills will be evaluated. The grading scale goes from 1 to 30 with honours (cum laude): 1-17 fail, 18-21 sufficient, 22-24 fair, 25-27 good, 28-29 very good, 30-30 with honours (cum laude) excellent.

Students will be invited to develop a personal research on a subject of their choice, which could be presented as a presentation in class or as a written paper.

Contents


The course engages the the history and the theory of serial narratives, exploring the role of adaptation, intertextuality and intermediality in the context of mass media and popular culture.

Classes will be held in person. In order to facilitate the participation of students from other campuses (Chieti or Pescara), classes will begin at the academic quarter hour and, in any case, online connection will be provided as additional support for those who may encounter travel difficulties.
