Course Objectives

The course contributes to the achievement of the educational objectives and learning outcomes of the degree course (Corso di Studi), providing an essential knowledge base within the framework of historical culture, in particular according to the following points: Knowledge and understanding: To stimulate the knowledge of the main phases of the history of the modern age through the critical use of in-depth texts and sources, documentaries and iconographies, which open the way to specific competences of a historical-methodological nature. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding and develop independent judgment: To stimulate the capacity of analysis and understanding in order to use them in the working field, developing and promoting an autonomous sensitivity towards the historical interpretation of sources and historical texts related to the modern age. Communication skills: To promote the development of linguistic and argumentative skills specific to the themes of the history of the modern age, paying particular attention to the understanding and assimilation of the specific language of the subject in order to communicate information, ideas, problems and solutions to specialist and non-specialist interlocutors. Learning ability: To promote the methodological awareness related to modern history in order to develop autonomous learning and analysis skills.

Teaching Methods

Frontal lessons in the classroom; possible seminars or in-depth thematic lessons and visits to archives and libraries.

Assessment Methods

The final exam consists of an oral examination on the course content. Knowledge of the content and bibliography provided in the course, quality of oral expression, and critical and methodological skills will be evaluated. The grading scale goes from 1 to 30 with honours (cum laude). The grading scale goes from 1 to 30 with honours (cum laude): 1-17 fail, 18-21 sufficient, 22-24 fair, 25-27 good, 28-29 very good, 30-30 with honours (cum laude) excellent.

Title: HISTORY OF THE EARLY MODERN AGE The 6 CFU module has a general character related to the knowledge of the main events in the history of the modern age from the discovery of America to the Restoration era emphasizing the most important historiographical themes and problems. The 3 CFU module explores the topic of tolerance, which in the modern age sees a profound transformation of the concept itself, from privileged protection of the monarch to respect for diversity of thought and religion.
