Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide the basic knowledge on the most accepted and spread scientific models regarding the formation, measurement, prediction and change of attitudes and behaviours; the course provide also knowledge and ability to reflect on the mechanisms through which attitudes regulate individual and collective behavior in community and organizational contexts.
Graduates will acquire:
Know and understand:
- the basics of attitudes (structure, formation, function in individual and collective life)
-the basics of attitude change
- the basic knowledge of the psychology of persuasive communication
-to be able to apply attitude’s models of prediction and changing
- to be able to apply explicit and implicit attitude and behaviour measurement techniques, appropriately to different contexts
-to be able to identify and analyse social phenomena involving attitudes towards disadvantaged groups and social categories
- to know and correctly interpret the interdependence of intrapersonal, interpersonal and collective factors in the maintenance of social attitudes and behaviours
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
- to be able to apply what has been learned at theoretical level to real cases and in various contexts
-to recognise and discern the appropriateness and applicability of intervention hypotheses to change attitudes and behaviours in relation to various contexts (organisational, political and consumer)
Autonomy of judgement
- to be able to formulate appropriate judgements in reading and discussing the proposed scientific articles
- be able to evaluate real cases
-to be able to evaluate proposals for intervention, also in relation to professional ethics
Communication skills
- to be able to communicate clearly and unambiguously one's own knowledge and ideas on the course contents to specialists and non-specialists people
Learning skills
-to be able to understand and reflect on the course topics
-to be able to understand a higher level lectures (i.e. doctoral lessons)

Course Prerequisites

Previous knowledge on the social cognition and social perception theories are requested as well as on psychometry and research methodology.

Teaching Methods

Lectures 48 hours. 2-3 hours twice a week. Teaching includes lectures enriched by group activities dedicated to the critical discussion of essays extracts, research papers, in-depth sheets and videos; 16 hours of hands-on seminars. Attendance is not compulsory, but highly recommended.

Assessment Methods

The examination take place in oral form and focus on the recommended texts and articles; students will prove to be able to discuss on the course topics both in scientific and informative form; they will also prove to be able to discuss on the practical experiences or on their project;
Grades are expressed in thirties. The weight of each piece of exam will be as follows: 40% topics course; 20% communicative ability; 20% scientific talk; 20% research project/research articles

Contents

The course includes basic aspects of the psychology of attitudes, such as structure, functions, formation and change, theoretical models of persuasion. The course also examines aspects of particular interest for community and organizational life related to the expression of social attitudes, such as political attitudes, racial prejudice, sexism and ageism.
Particular attention is paid to the formation and change of health, political and consumer attitudes and behaviours.
