Syllabus

Course Objectives


The course aims to provide students with the theoretical foundations of the psychology of language and communication, along with some tools for the analysis of spontaneous speech and non-verbal communication. The course's objective is to build knowledge and skills useful for understanding and intervening in individual behavior, managing communication within and between organizations, and planning more effective public policies. Additionally, the course intends to promote the development of critical thinking regarding how the use of language and adopted communication strategies can influence the social, political, and economic context, and the impact of new technologies on communication techniques, with related effects on behavior. At the end of the course the student will be able to: - Use the technical terminology specific to the psychology of language - Identify the use of main communication strategies in various corporate and public contexts - Recognize the connection between language, thought, and behavior, using it in different professional settings - Generate logical reasoning and discourse, recognizing incomplete and biased reasoning - Communicate scientific results clearly, comprehensively, and effectively - Being autonomous in specialistic knowledge gathering and summarizing

Teaching Methods


The course is articulated in 48 hours, comprising: - lectures with power point presentation; - practical exercises (e.g., scientific articles' reading and discussion); - continuous tutoring activity. Attendance is optional.

Assessment Methods


A written exam will assess students' knowledge acquisition, technical lexicon, and ability to synthesize and critically organize information. The exam will consist of: - 15 questions with multiple-choice answers (scoring: 1.5 points for each question, max score: 22.5 points) - 1 open-ended question (scoring: max 10 points). Grades will be on a 30/30 scale, and the minimum grade to pass the exam is 18/30. The final exam will be the same for attending and not attending students.
