Course Objectives
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
The course aims to the acquisition of linguistic communication skills – receptive, productive and interactive – according to the C1+-C2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, and it also includes competences in the analysis of linguistic problems, especially in the field of interlinguistic contact.
APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
Thanks to the acquisition of linguistic knowledge and cultural competences in French and European areas, the students will acquire the ability to combine knowledge in an interdisciplinary way, and interpret different cultural areas. They will also be able to identify and solve problems related to linguistic exchange.
MAKING JUDGMENT:
Thanks to the acquisition of concepts of French and Francophone culture and society, and the consequent development of their competence, students will be able to face problematic situations resulting from the comparison between different cultures, and combine knowledge in an interdisciplinary way.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
Students will acquire the ability to express their own thoughts, projects, and the results obtained from their studies in an articulated way, and efficiently communicate in an autonomous way, applying what they have learned during the course of studies to diversified working contexts.
LEARNING SKILLS:
Students will be able to create relationships and interact in more languages with heterogeneous interlocutors in different professional and cultural contexts, in which they will know how to interpret, understand, and use the formalities of expression and communication in autonomous way.
Specific Learning Objectives
In line with the general descriptors outlined above, the French Language and Translation course (LM-37/LM-38, C2 level) aims to develop the following specific competences:
to master theoretical and methodological tools for discourse analysis, applied to a variety of authentic texts (journalistic, institutional, literary, promotional, etc.);
to refine translation skills from a discursive and functional perspective, tailoring the translation process to the register, communicative intent, and context of use;
to identify and reformulate appropriately in Italian the main communicative and argumentative strategies used in contemporary French texts;
to develop awareness of intercultural and interlinguistic mechanisms involved in specialized and semi-specialized translation;
to strengthen critical reading, writing, and linguistic mediation skills in contexts with a high discursive density (e.g. institutional, political, media and cultural communication);
for LM-38 students, to further develop their ability to use French in diplomatic, legal and international contexts, also through the translation of official documents.
Course Prerequisites
Have a C1 level of French proficiency.

Lectures, group and individual work, translation lab.
Assessment Methods
The written exam consists of two parts: a guided discourse analysis of a text in French and the translation of the same text into Italian.

The course, designed for second-year students of the LM-37 and LM-38 master’s degree programs, aims to consolidate the linguistic, communicative, and translation competences corresponding to the C2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).It is structured into three integrated modules that combine theoretical and practical approaches to discourse analysis, functional specialized translation, and — for students enrolled in the LM-38 curriculum — a specific focus on institutional and international political translation.
The overall objective is to develop a critical, professional, and informed approach to French in its written and oral uses, within authentic and discourse-intensive contexts
Module A – Du texte au discours: Theory and Practice of Discourse Analysis
Compulsory for all students (LM-37 and LM-38)This module offers a theoretical and applied introduction to discourse analysis, with particular attention to authentic texts (journalistic, institutional, literary, etc.) and their communicative function. Students will be guided in identifying discursive strategies (presupposition, implicature, ethos, pathos, argumentative logic, modalization, polyphony), applying these tools to interpretation and, when relevant, to the translation of short excerpts.
Module B – Atelier de traduction: Translating Discourse
Compulsory for all students (LM-37 and LM-38)This module addresses translation from a discursive perspective, moving beyond the sentence level. The approach will be functional and oriented towards the specialized and semi-specialized translation of texts in the fields of tourism, journalism, and popular science. Emphasis will be placed on the function, register, target audience, and communicative intent of the text.
Module C – Le français des relations internationales
Compulsory for LM-38 students only (2 additional ECTS credits)This module develops specialized translation skills in the field of political and diplomatic communication, through the analysis and translation of authentic documents from institutional sources (UN, EU, NGOs, ministries, etc.). Focus will be placed on strategic discourse and on interlinguistic and intercultural adaptation.
