Syllabus

Course Objectives


By the end of the course, students will be able to:


Analyse and interpret authentic texts in Sino-Italian professional contexts (commercial, corporate, and institutional);

Produce professional texts in Chinese (business emails, commercial proposals, presentations) appropriate to the communicative context and the intended audience;

Translate complex documents from Chinese into Italian and vice versa in areas such as international trade, corporate communication and institutional relations, providing reasoned justification for the translation choices made;

Apply linguistic and intercultural mediation strategies in the management of Sino-Italian professional situations;

Critically evaluate the sociolinguistic and pragmatic appropriateness of texts and interactions in professional contexts, proposing alternative solutions.

Course Prerequisites


A strong command of Chinese language and communication skills, at a level equivalent to or above HSK4.

Teaching Methods


The course adopts a student-centred approach based on:


Interactive lectures for the introduction of theoretical content (syntactic structures, specialised vocabulary, pragmatics of professional Chinese);

Collaborative analysis of authentic texts (corporate documents, commercial correspondence, institutional communications) with guided discussion of their linguistic and pragmatic features;

Translation workshops involving the comparison of translation strategies and peer review;

Text manipulation and composition activities to develop productive language skills;

Simulations of professional scenarios (negotiations, corporate presentations, linguistic mediation) for real-context application;

Oral presentations (public speaking) to strengthen communicative competence in formal settings;

Independent study of materials provided by the instructor (available on Teams).

Teaching activities promote active learning through students' direct engagement in the analysis, production and critical evaluation of professional texts.

Assessment Methods


Assessment is structured in two components, one written and one oral, both based on texts relating to the subject areas covered during the course. Admission to the oral examination is conditional upon passing the written examination.
1. Written Examination (duration: 2 hours)
The written examination includes:


Text composition and/or manipulation tasks in Chinese (e.g. drafting a business email, summarising a document, reworking a text);

Translation from Chinese into Italian of a text from a professional context.

The use of printed and electronic dictionaries is permitted.
Assessment criteria for the written examination: morphosyntactic and lexical accuracy; pragmatic and sociolinguistic appropriateness to the communicative context; textual coherence and cohesion; translation accuracy and ability to convey the meaning of the source text; appropriateness of terminological choices.
2. Oral Examination
The oral examination includes:


Reading, translation and syntactic and lexical analysis of one of the texts studied during the course;

Discussion of the sociocultural and pragmatic aspects of the text;

Critical engagement with the communicative and translation strategies adopted.

Alternative format (optional, to be agreed with the instructor at least one month before the examination):
Presentation of a dossier on a professionally-oriented text chosen by the student, consistent with the topics addressed in class, including:


Sociocultural contextualisation of the text;

Targeted linguistic analysis of the relevant structures;

Translation commentary with reasoned justification of the choices made.

Assessment criteria for the oral examination: accuracy in reading and translation; syntactic and lexical analytical skills; understanding and discussion of sociocultural and pragmatic aspects; clarity and fluency of expression in Chinese; critical thinking and independent judgement (for the optional dossier).

Contents


The course focuses on the advanced use of Chinese in professional and institutional contexts that characterise the economic, cultural and commercial relations between China and Italy. Through the analysis and translation of authentic texts, students will work on areas such as business, international trade, corporate communication, institutional relations and intercultural mediation, developing the linguistic and pragmatic competences essential for operating in contemporary Sino-Italian professional environments.
The programme is structured around five thematic modules:


Module 1 – CV and job application;

Module 2 – Companies and start-ups;

Module 3 – Tourism and services;

Module 4 – Education and the teaching industry;

Module 5 – Linguistic and cultural mediation.

Attendance and Office Hours
​​​​​​​Regular attendance is strongly encouraged. Non-attending students will follow the same syllabus and use the same reference materials; however, any additional requirements must be agreed upon with the instructor at least two months before the examination.
The instructor holds weekly office hours by appointment for queries regarding the course programme, examination procedures, or assistance with thesis writing and research projects.
