Course Objectives

At the end of the course, students will:
- have acquired the written and oral production and comprehension skills required for level C1.2 (know-how)
- have acquired the metalinguistic skills required for level C1.2 (know-how to explain)
- have acquired adequate theoretical knowledge of the varieties of Spanish
- be able to translate specialised and non-specialised texts from and into Spanish (similar to those translated in class)

Course Prerequisites

In order to access this class, students need to have oral and written comprehension and production skills corresponding to Level C1.1 of CEFR for Spanish. In order to sit the oral exam for this class, students must have passed the 1st year exam of Spanish Language and Translation.

Teaching Methods

The course consists of: (a) classes held by the instructor(s); (b) practical sessions held by the lector(s).The classes offered by the instructor(s) are both lectures (aimed at providing the necessary theoretical background) and seminars (with students' active participation).The practical sessions with the lector(s) are highly interactive and are necessary to acquire the language skills needed to successfully complete the final exam.For these reasons, attendance of both the instructors' and lectors' classes is strongly recommended.

Assessment Methods

EXAM
The exam consists of a written part and an oral part. It will be possible to take the two parts of the exam in different sessions (always in this order: first written, then oral). The exam must be completed by the last session of the 2025/2026 academic year (January/February 2027).
The written exam grade remains valid until the last session of the 2025/2026 academic year (January/February 2027).
WRITTEN PART
The written exam consists of:
1) questions (open and closed) relating to the theoretical part (varieties of Spanish)
2) Written production at level C1.2
3) Written comprehension at level C1.2
4) Translation from and into Spanish of texts similar to those covered in class (which will be made available to students on the TEAMS channel)
There is a single exam mark.
An exemption is available for point 1. The specific date and procedures for the exemption will be communicated during the lessons and published on the TEAMS channel, in the FILE section of the course folder.
If the exemption is granted, the mark will remain valid until the last exam session of the 2025-2026 academic year.
ORAL PART
To be admitted to the oral exam, students must have passed the written part.
The oral part will aim to assess, through a dialogue between the lecturer, the reader and the student:
- the acquisition of a language level equivalent to C1.2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
- the student's comprehension and linguistic processing skills based on the content of the books included in the programme (see Reference texts - readings).

READING
For the oral exam, students must read 3 books of their choice from the following list:

Pedro Páramo (Juan Rulfo)
Additional titles may be provided during the year. Students will find the updated list with new titles in the course folder on the TEAMS channel.

The course aims to help you get:
- C1.2 level of the CEFR (in collaboration with the language department) and the metalinguistic skills that go with it;
- theoretical knowledge about the different varieties of Spanish, with a special focus on diatopic variety
- translation skills for different types of texts

PROGRAMME VALIDITY
The programme is valid for the entire 2025/2026 academic year (until the January/February 2027 session). In order to record their final grade, students must have taken and passed all parts of the exam by the last session of the 2025-2026 academic year. If the exam is not completed by the last session of the current academic year, students must retake the entire exam in accordance with the procedures set out for the 2026/2027 academic year.
NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS
There is no difference in the programme between attending and non-attending students: non-attending students must study the course content and skills independently, referring to the materials indicated in the bibliography and those made available on the Teams channel.
TEACHER'S OFFICE HOURS

LANGUAGE ASSISTANCE
Language assistance (level C1.2) is essential for practising the language skills required to pass the exam: it is therefore very important to attend the language assistance sessions in order to achieve the level required by the course. All information regarding the language lab is available on the CLA website (https://cla.unich.it/). Any materials and textbooks required for the language lab will be indicated by the language lab assistants themselves.
