Course Objectives

The course represents an ideal continuation of the German Literature I course through which students have had the opportunity to learn about the main works and eras of German literature from the Reformation to the early twentieth century. The German Literature II course aims to deepen students' knowledge of the historical-literary period ranging from the Enlightenment to Expressionism up to the paradoxical theater of Dürrenmatt, through the reading and commentary of seven dramatic texts and a choice of poems selected by the teacher. In this way the student will acquire various skills and at the end of the course will be able to: - autonomously reflect on the limits of literary periodization; - analyze the main critical and philosophical references of each era and their influence on the most developed literary genres; - place the texts in their historical-cultural horizon; - recognize different linguistic registers and identify the characteristic elements of certain literary currents.

Basic knowledge of the German language. Passing the exam in German literature I.

The Italian translations listed here are available in the University library system. For the purposes of the course, later or earlier editions are also fine. Introductions, prefaces and notes are part of the curriculum. Contents

The course aims to provide a general overview of the developments in German literature, particularly in the field of theatre and poetry, from the eighteenth to the twentieth century. Each era will be studied through a selection of literary texts. In addition to a selection of poems, provided by the lecturer, the following plays will be read together during the course: 1) Minna von Barnhelm (1767) by G.E. Lessing; 2) Götz von Berlichingen (1773) by J.W. Goethe; 3) Maria Stuart (1800) by F. Schiller; 4) Leonce und Lena (1836) by G. Büchner; 5) Die Weber (1892) by G. Hauptmann; 6) Das Leben des Galilei (1938/39) by B. Brecht; 7) Die Physiker (1961) by F. Dürrenmatt.
